Ecclesiastes 4:12 "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."

In a lot of ways…

… our story feels similar to the story of Frodo and Sam from the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. I know it sounds odd at first, but I bet the more you really start to consider it the more you start to think to yourself, “Huh! The Frodo and Sam story is a lot like my story with my wife or my husband also!”

This one scene really makes the point in my mind. See if it does the same for you.

Scene Setup

It’s the second movie in the trilogy – The Two Towers. The Battle of Helm’s Deep had just been claimed in victory by the Fellowship. If you recall this battle was the second largest battle in the trilogy that pitted Wizard Saruman against the Rohirrim under King Theoden.

The scene that I resonate with most is the one following this epic battle where Sam and Frodo – now clear from a near death experience of their own – are collecting themselves to continue their quest to Mordor. Let’s pick up the dialogue here.

FRODO:

I can’t do this Sam.

SAM:

I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here, but we are. It’s like in the great stories Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were… and sometimes you didn’t want to know the end because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad happened? But in the end it’s only a passing thing. The shadow… even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out all the clearer. Those are the stories that stayed with you that meant something even if you were too small to understand why. But I think Mr. Frodo I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. They kept going because they were holding onto something.

FRODO:

What are we holding onto Sam?

SAM:

That there is some good in this world Mr. Frodo and it’s worth fighting for.

====scene end====

Yes. I do believe there is a lot of similarities there between Frodo and Sam and Andrea and me. One thing is for certain… Andrea’s heart is worth fighting for! I believe she would say the same about mine. And isn’t that what it’s really all about anyway…

At the top of this page is a clip from the full-length movie I produced to surprise Andrea with on our proposal night. I’ve cut out the first section that talks about our story. I hope you enjoy it. You can find the full-length feature film and the live portion of the proposal under the “About Us/Our Proposal” tab at the top of this website or simply by clicking here
